Tsho Rolpa Trek Overview

The Tsho Rolpa Trek traverses the central Himalayan peaks of the Rolwaling mountain range. It neighbors the towering Mt. Everest massifs to the east and the Mount Langtang range to the west. The Tsho Rolpa is in the northeastern vicinity of the Dolakha district, Bagmati Province, Nepal.

10 Days Tsho Rolpa Lake sits at the plinth of the Rolwaling mountains, encircling an area of 1.65 kilometers. White, lofty peaks surround it at an altitude of 4540 meters. Tsho Rolpa's literal translation in the Sherpa dialect means "Lake of Rolwaling Valley." Locals call this Lake Chhuygima Pokhari for its water that changes color. The Rolwaling region, with its glacial and River-cut valleys, has religious significance for Hindus and Buddhists alike.

The Trek to Tsho Rolpa is an engaging journey that follows the Tama Koshi River to its source. You will encounter the diverse flora and fauna of the Gaurishankar Conservation Area in this traverse. Additionally, small Sherpa hamlets that practice Tibetan Buddhism are another highlight of this adventure.

The Rolwaling mountain range features majestic peaks such as Gauri Shankar (7,134 m), Melungtse (7,181 m), Dorje Lakpa (6,966 m), Tashi Lapcha Peak (5,761 m), and Yalung Ri (5,630 m). These peaks will keep your escapade to Tsho Rolpa Lake filled with unmatched beauty and astounding vistas. The trek's highest point is Tsho Rolpa Lake, at 4540 meters.

The Tsho Rolpa Trekking Route is a remote area that is not often visited. These highlands have long been off the radar of Nepal's trekking industry, preserving the area's topography and atmosphere. If you are looking for an off-the-beaten-path trek in Nepal, the trek to Rolwaling Valley's Tsho Rolpa Lake could be the one for you.

We begin our trek at the base of the Rolwaling Valley, in Simigaun, at an altitude of 2020 meters. The route then elevates, passing through small Sherpa villages beside the raging Tama Koshi River. Your journey is filled with small tea shops all along the way. This trek encompasses a wide range of geological formations.

You will traverse tropical and subtropical forests for the first few days of your trek. As you ascend above 4000 meters at Bedding, the Himalayan valleys appear. Then, semi-alpine and alpine terrain dominate the trekking trail, with high mountains surrounding it.

Most areas beyond Bedding are characterized by rocky landslides, glacial moraines, glacial lakes, glaciers, high passes, and streams originating from Rolwaling glaciers. Tsho Rolpa Lake is a turquoise lake nestled between towering mountains. The Langdung Himal bounds it to the north, the Rolwaling glaciers to the east, and the vast Gaurishankar Conservation Area to the south.

Its location is ideal for anyone seeking a remote gateway to commercial trekking trails. Trekking Information on Tsho Rolpa is readily available through Boundless Adventures. Please inquire with us for further information.

The Trekking Map provides detailed insight into the trail. The journey begins from Kathmandu and heads east towards the Dolakha district, following the Araniko Highway. From the Dolakha district headquarters in Charikot, we descend to the Tamakoshi River and follow its bed to the lake.

Where is the Tsho Rolpa Route Located?

The Tsho Rolpa route is in the Rolpa Valley, Dolakha District, Nepal. Tsho Rolpa lies east of the Langtang region and west of the Khumbu region. The village is under the Gaurishanker Village Development Committee and within the Gaurishankar Conservation area. The trekking route to Tsho Rolpa begins in Chhetchhet, a 1,525 m (5,003 ft) Sherpa village. Then the trek heads towards Dongang at 2,790 m / 9,153 ft.

From Dongang, the trek heads towards the village of Beding, a larger, rolling settlement (a Sherpa village) at 3692m (12113ft). Nagaon is another of the oldest settlements you'll pass on the route to Tsho Rolpa at 4180m/ 13714ft. After Nagoan, you'll arrive at your destination and return via the same path.

Geography and Landscape

Rolwaling Valley, which encompasses Tsho Rolpa Lake, features dramatic, rugged terrain. The region's high-altitude landscape creates a remote, limited-access environment. Your trek to Tsho Rolpa first follows the Tamakoshi River, a Himalayan whitewater river. The Tamakoshi River basin is filled with lush, dense tropical forests.

As we delve deeper into the valley, the landscape is dominated by rocky mountains, deep canyons, broad river basins, rocky landslides, and steep ridges. The Rolwaling area is at the core heart of the Gaurishankar Conservation Area. This location has diverse flora, including rhododendrons, oaks, pines, and firs. Furthermore, the dense forests here are home to Himalayan tahr, snow leopard, red panda, and numerous bird species.

Know Before You Go

When choosing the best season for the Tsho Rolpa trek, consider factors such as weather and trail conditions, as well as personal preferences. Considering all these factors, spring (March, April, and May) and autumn (September, October, and November) are widely appreciated by trekkers and regarded as the best seasons.

While spring and autumn are the finest and most desired, summer is also becoming popular for the Tsho Rolpa trek. Spring and autumn have favorable weather conditions. The summer also comes with sunny days, making it an ideal season for trekking. Heavy summer rainfall once made trekking less popular, but the situation is different now due to global warming.

Seasons Daytime Temperature Night time Temperature
Spring 10°C to 15°C -5°C to 5°C
Autumn 10°C to 20°C 0°C to 10°C
Winter 0°C -to 10°C -10°C to 0°C
Summer  15°C to 25°C 5°C to 15°C

The weather pattern around the year in Nepal differs. Also, the weather patterns at lower elevations differ from those at higher elevations. The spring months are warmer and milder, melting the snow and revealing green grassland and lush forests. The autumn months offer a vibrant environment with comfortable, stable weather. But summer and winter are the harshest, with summer bringing heavy rain and winter characterized by heavy snowfall in higher-altitude areas.

Lodging is in a teahouse. Like mountain lodges in the Alps, teahouses are spread along the trail, flogging. You will have a teahouse available from the start of the trek at Simigaun to the end at Na Village. Teahouses are wooden structures that provide basic lodging. The teahouses on various treks in Nepal are pretty similar. Also, the teahouse rooms usually have single, double, or triple beds. Mattresses, quilts, pillows, and blankets will be provided. Attached bathrooms are not available in all teahouses and are optional. Wi-Fi and hot showers are available in most tea houses but cost extra.

In the Tsho Rolpa Trek, you have multiple meal options. Since this is teahouse trekking, a cook will be available at every stop. The food options range from Indian, Nepalese, and Tibetan dishes. Dal Bhaat is a Nepalese dish most commonly eaten during treks. It includes a portion of rice, lentil soup, vegetable curry, and pickle.

Furthermore, this dish is nutritious and filling. During the trek, being in the best possible health condition is paramount. We don't recommend eating meat products or canned meat during your trek. Pastas, mashed potatoes, French fries, noodles, and soup are available in most teahouses. The breakfast menu includes Tibetan bread, noodles, pancakes, oatmeal, and others. If you have any unique meal preferences, please inform us in advance.

The Rolwaling region, including the trek area, is part of the Gaurishankar Conservation Area. For this trek, you need to obtain a conservation area permit. The Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit costs NPR 3000 (approximately $25). A TIMS card, which costs NPR 2,000 (roughly $15), is also required. Both of these permits can be obtained in Kathmandu. Your trekking agent can assist with obtaining these permits before your travel dates.

As of April 2023, FITs (solo independent trekkers) cannot travel in Nepal without a trekking guide. A professional trekking guide can assist you in many ways. Navigation, safety, guidance, and emergency evacuation are subject matters that a trekking guide will help you with. At Boundless Adventures, we provide a registered trekking guide with years of experience. Also, our guides are local to the trekking destination and thoroughly know the terrain, culture, pathways, and others. Also, they have basic first-aid training in case of any unforeseen events.

Boundless Adventure's all-inclusive Tsho Rolpa Trekking Package includes ground transportation. You will be provided with private transportation services to/from the airport. Furthermore, the road travel from Kathmandu to ChetChet and back is included in the package. We provide the best available vehicle for our tours. Vehicles are allocated based on the number of passengers in the following manner:

  • Two people to 3 people can get a Car
  • Four to 7 people will get a Jeep or van.
  • Seven to 15 People will get a Hiace
  • 15+ Tourist coaches

Trekking in Tsho Rolpa is an easy-going, smooth trek on gradually elevating terrain. However, the highest point on the trek is at 4550 m (14,927 ft) above sea level, so there is a low risk of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). Still, the Tsho Rolpa trek is suitable for beginners and first-time trekkers, including families, as it is comfortable for senior citizens and children.

The landmass surrounding Tsho Rolpa Lake and the Rolwaling Valley consists of a traverse along the riverbanks. Additionally, you must walk for 4 to 5 hours daily during the traverse. Therefore, proper acclimatization and planning are necessary before the trek to Tsho Rolpa. Furthermore, trekkers should stroll while ascending and descending. Hiring an experienced guide makes your overall experience safer and more manageable.

All in all, trekking to Tsho Rolpa is easily accessible, but paying attention to your body and choosing an itinerary that includes acclimatization can help reduce the risk of problems during the trek. Furthermore, staying hydrated is necessary.

The Trekking Route has a quaint nature, amusing geography, distinct culture, and towering mountains. According to the Tsho Rolpa Trek itinerary provided by Boundless Adventures, we start our journey in Kathmandu. We head eastbound, following the Araniko Highway to Khadichaur.

Leaving the highway, we head towards the district headquarters of Dolakha, Charikot. From Charikot, we descend towards the raging Tamakoshi River. From the Tamakoshi Bridge, we take the river pathway for another two hours to reach ChetChet.

This will be our starting point for the trek. We continue further upstream along the river basin, passing various villages along the way. The trail passes through small hamlets along the Tamakoshi River. Simigaun, Dongang, Bedding, and Na are the villages you will stay at before reaching Tsho Rolpa Lake at 4540 meters. We return to Kathmandu and retrace our footsteps, ending our journey.

The Sherpa people have long inhabited the Rolwaling Valley. The Rolwaling region neighbors the Solukhumbu district to its east. The Sherpa people migrated to the highlands of these areas long ago. "The customary belief system followed by these communities is Tibetan Buddhism." You can see various Tibetan monuments scattered along the trekking trail. Along the trekking route, you will traverse numerous Mani walls, shrines, monasteries, and prayer flags.

The Gaurishankar Conservation Area encompasses most of the Rolwaling region. The areas surrounding Gaurishankar Himal and others in its range are included. The conservation area is filled with natural treasures from the Dolakha district. It adjoins Sagarmatha National Park to the east and Langtang National Park to the south.

Snow leopards, red pandas, Himalayan tahr, Himalayan black bear, Himalayan monal, and clouded leopards are among the significant animals in the area. This conservation area covers lowlands filled with subtropical, temperate, and Alpine meadows, rhododendrons, and bamboo groves, totaling 2179 square kilometers.

In addition to pristine Tsho Rolpa Lake, numerous other glacial lakes are found in the Rolwaling region. The area is filled with towering Himalayan mountains that stay shimmering white with snow throughout the year.

Sitting in the lap of these mountains are numerous glacial lakes that change their shape and outlook every year. To name a few, Tsho Rolpa Lake (4540 m), Chh Gayuma Lake (4,000 m), Yalung Ri Lake, and Tarkarding Glacier Lake are among the popular ones. Numerous other unnamed regional lakes are hidden in the deep Rolwaling valleys.

The highest within the Rolwaling range is Mt. Gaurishankar, which measures 7,134 meters. Hindus consider Gaurishankar one of the sacred mountains of Lord Shiva and his wife, Parvati. The two pinnacles of the mountain have long been worshiped as the forms of these Hindu deities.

Buddhist people also traditionally revere Gaurishankar. This mountain resembles a sleeping woman, making it alluring to others.

The first stretch of the trek from Simigaon begins with a descent along the slope. We walk along the edge of a hill before stepping onto stone-paved stairs. Dense forests cross our trail, which then winds up and down. We cross the suspension bridge over the Rolwaling River and head further up. During this stretch, you will have your first glimpse of Gaurishankar Mountain. You will make several steep ascents before finally reaching Dongang, your stopover for the night.

Today's trek takes us to the largest Sherpa village of Rolwaling Valley, Bedding. The traverse first passes through dense pine forests. We reached Nyamare after a 3-hour trek for our lunch. This small hamlet with not more than 15 houses is a popular stopover for trekkers. We continue our journey, making small ascents along the way. We reach the Buddhist hub of Bedding before sunset. There is a prominent Buddhist at the entry gate of Beding village. You will spend your night here.

Today's traverse is distinct from yesterday's, as the elevation rises above 4000 meters. The green, lush forests now turn to barren, semi-arid hills. We cross the Rolwaling River, walking alongside. The Rolwaling Valley flattens with a widened river bank as you ascend higher. You will pass through numerous pasturelands and grasslands during the traverse. After 6 hours, we came across a vast Mani structure, its surface draped with Tibetan prayer flags. Right beside it is a huge rock on which the Bodhisattva is beautifully painted. After crossing these monuments, we reach Na village, our stopover for the night.

We set out on our hike to Tso Rolpa from Na village early in the morning. The hike takes about 2 hours. The first stretch takes us over a suspension bridge over the Rolwaling River. It then ascends steeply over a dry trail carved into the hill face. The trail then winds between two huge glaciers before opening onto a broad valley. Tsho Rolpa Lake sits quietly in this valley. On a clear day, you will gaze at the lake and see the Rolwaling Mountains perfectly reflected in it. We explored the lake for a bit, then began our descent. Na Village will be our stopover for the night.

Several suspension bridges appear before you on this traverse. You stop at Chhet Chhet for the night, ending your trekking journey.
