Upper Mustang Trekking Permit Cost Overview

What do you think about the Upper Mustang trekking permit cost with your friends, Family, and group? You must have two separate trekking permits: one for the Upper Mustang trek (Restricted permit) and the other for the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit. The restricted permit costs US$500/per person for the first week.

You must pay an additional US$50/per person each day afterward. Upper Mustang lies inside the Annapurna Conservation Area, at an altitude of 3700m above sea level. So, it would be best if you had permits for the Annapurna Conservation Area, which cost US$30 per person for the trip. However, the Annapurna Conservation Area permits cost only INR 1500/- per person for Indian nationals.

There are many different restricted trekking areas in Nepal, and it is one of them. That's why you must have special trekking permits and a regular permit for the Annapurna Conservation for the Upper Mustang Trekking and Jeep Tour. Check it out for costs and information for the coming years.

A single permit is allowed for trekking in the Upper Mustang. The Nepalese government changed the restricted-permit rules in March 2026, allowing one to obtain a single permit to enter the Mustang trek. However, people usually trek in groups or couples and are not alone. Boundless Adventure has to fill out an online form on your behalf, with a copy of your passport, an auto-sized photo, and send it to the immigration office to arrange the permits.

How Do You Get To Upper Mustang?

Lo-Mangthang was the capital of the Upper Mustang. It is famous for its unique landscape, local culture, Buddhist arts, and architecture. It would help if you flew or drove from Kathmandu to Pokhara, then to Jomsom. Jomsom is where you would like to start your Upper Mustang trek (2,780 m above sea level).

You will reach Jomsom the same day you fly from Pokhara, and you will start your trek by walking towards Kagbeni Village. This is the start and end of the restricted trekking area. We highly recommend you trek from the beginning of February to the end of November, as it is in the rain-shadow region of Nepal's Himalayas. It is the only trekking area in Nepal where you can trek even during the monsoon season.

However, people can also visit Upper Mustang by a Jeep tour. The Mustang tour takes one week to complete from Kathmandu by Jeep, not trek.

Mustang Culture and Tradition

The population of Upper Mustang is only about 6,000, and everyone in this region follows Tibetan Buddhism. The people of this region have their own culture and traditions passed down from generation to generation, along with their festivals and ceremonies. The TIJI festival is one of the famous festivals of Lo-Mangthang, Upper Mustang.

TIJI festival is all about prayers for three days for world peace. People dance while wearing masks of the Lord Buddha during this festival, believing in and hoping for the Lord Buddha's reincarnation. It is usually held in the third week of May each year, but it may vary depending on their calendars.
