Our trekking starts from Jomsom, a popular town in the Mustang region of Nepal, following the Kali Gandaki river. It is approximately 2,720 meters (8,923 feet) above sea level and serves as a gateway to Upper Mustang, a key stop for trekkers heading to the region.

The altitude of Upper Mustang ranges from 2,800 meters (9,186 feet) to 6,000 meters (19,685 feet) above sea level, with the main settlement of Lo Manthang situated at around 3,800 meters (12,467 feet). After traveling through places like Kagbeni, Chele, Syangbochen, and Tsarang, you’ll reach the hidden kingdom of Lo-Manthang.

During the journey, you’ll encounter high passes like Chogo La and witness snowcapped peaks like Dhaulagiri (8,167 m)—the 7th highest mountain in the world—Annapurna I (8,091 m), Nilgiri (6,940 m), Tukuche Peak (6,920 m), and Machapuchare (6,993m).

Upper Mustang Trek Difficulty Explained

The trek is moderately complex because of several factors. First, the high altitude (over 3800 meters) can cause altitude sickness, so trekkers must be careful while traveling. Second, the climate is dry and windy, which makes it difficult to find water, and temperatures can change suddenly, which may cause headaches and nausea.

We should take diarrhea medicine because unfamiliar spices or ingredients in local meals may upset the digestion. The rocky and uneven trail also requires good physical fitness and balance as we walk continuously for 17 days. However, the breathtaking views and unique cultural experiences make the journey worth it, as long as trekkers prepare well. Similarly, Nepal has many other off-road driving roads.

 Some theories also suggest that they were used as burial chambers, as human remains and bone fragments have been found there. By the 10th–12th centuries, these caves became associated with Buddhist monks, who used them as meditation cells and monasteries.

Best Time to Visit Upper Mustang for Trekking

The best time to trek in Upper Mustang is between March and early June and September and November. These months offer excellent weather and clear skies, making it perfect for trekking. Unlike the rest of Nepal, Upper Mustang does not face heavy rainfall in the summer. 

Winter (December to February) can be frigid,  with many lodges remaining closed and locals migrating towards the south, making it an unsuitable time for trekking.

Permits for Upper Mustang Region

Restricted Area Permits (RAP)

To trek in the Upper Mustang area, trekkers need to obtain special RAP permits because the destination is in a prohibited region and shares a sensitive Tibetan border, which the government secures to secure the region’s cultural and ecological assets. The permit is mandatory once you go beyond Kagbeni village, where officials will check your documents at the checkpoint.  

The restricted permit costs $500 for a 10-day time interval. After that, $50 will be charged for each extra day you spend in that area. Moreover, only registered Nepali trekking agencies can arrange the permit. Remember to carry your passport and some photocopies, as you’ll need to show them at the checkpoints along the trail.

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

Upper Mustang falls under the border of Annapurna Conservation Areas; hence, we need to take ACAP permits from the Nepal Tourism Board office, which cost $27 for each person. The ACAP permit has no time limit; you can stay in the Annapurna region for as long as you want.
